BASIC PRINCIPLES OF PANCHKARMA
Panchkarma detoxify body and mind through following processes- 1.Oleation-Oleation or snehan process involves application of self prepared oil or oily substance prepared from various herbal and mineral ingredients which when applied on external surface of the body is called abhyanga and when is used in internal . The fat content in oil acts as an effective medium to reach the deeper tissues, thereby carrying the medicinal ingredients to every cell of the body and loosen up toxins stuck in the cells. The therapy is extremely useful in vatadosha dominated diseases.
Oleation therapies are generally followed by fomentation therapies called swedan since oleation make the tissues soft thus they become more flexible by subsequent fomentation. Deep-rooted toxins loosened by oleation liquefy due to fomentation and hence is easy to be thrown out of the body.
Stress disorders like insomnia, depression, migraine, anxiety, headaches, vertigo require mind relaxation. Shirodhara on the other hand aims to relieve the ailments related to head region. The procedure involves pouring of luke warm medicated oil on the center of the forehead in an oscillatory motion through a vessel at a uniform speed.
After liquefying the toxins with the help of complete internal and external oleation, the same gather in upper cavities of body from where they can be thrown out of body with the help of emetic medicines and decoctions.Vaman therapy is especially recommended primarily for kapha-dominated conditions such as obesity, asthma and hyperacidity. In chronic skin disorders, the therapy purifies the blood and removes the toxins affecting the skin.
Virechana therapy involves the elimination of elevated pitta dosha from the bowels through purgation process achieved by administration of medicated purgatives or laxatives which initially involves the external oleation and fomentation therapies to liquefy the toxins.Virechan therapy is recommended primarily for pitta-dominated conditions such as herpes zoster, jaundice, colitis, celiac disease etc.
Basti in itself is a complete therapy and involves administration of the medicated substances through enema. Enormous benefits of this therapy are extremely useful in treating complicated and chronic disorders. After complete nadi analysis and as per the disease, herbal self-prepared decoctions, oils, ghee or milk are administered according to bala (physical strength) of the patient into the rectum, from where the medication is absorbed directly and thus pacifying the aggravated vatadosha. This therapy is extremely effective against vata-dominated conditions such as arthritis, piles and constipation.
